I am Sharon Carter, your candidate for Florida State Representative.

As a long time citizen of this beautiful community, with the blessings of my family, friends, community leaders and you, my fellow supporters of the 61st district, I, Sharon Carter, want to represent you in the Florida House of Representatives.

This conclusion to serve you was a very difficult process. Serving you, the citizens of this community, is a 24/7 commitment, and I take on this responsibility with a work ethic taught to me from childhood by both of my parents. My father, Rev. Frank L. Carter, was founding pastor of the First Baptist Church of Highland Pines. He not only pastored this church, but he worked full-time for 32 years as a Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) employee. Rev. Carter instilled in me the importance of hard work, and commitment to take responsibility. He also gave me a heart for serving those in the community less fortunate than myself. My mother, Earnestine Carter, worked for the Hillsborough County Public School System. She enjoyed working with children and giving them the tools they needed to be successful in life. She was also a disciplinarian who instilled in us the drive to succeed.

I grew up in the Belmont Heights Community, East Tampa area, graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1982, and attended Florida State University. I have a son, Colin Carter, who graduated from Tampa Catholic High School and is currently attending college. He is majoring in Maritime Engineering and plans to be commissioned as a Naval Officer by 2014. My political career started while attending FSU as a legislative aide in the state capitol in 1991. My first postgraduate position was in Denver, Colorado where I was appointed by the Mayor, Wellington Webb to a special commission working with the local community. After working on numerous state, local and federal regulatory and compliance projects, I have become deeply involved in the local community since I have relocated back to the Tampa Bay area.

I have served, and will continue to serve with dignity and compassion, finding solutions to your needs through intimate involvement within all facets of our local community. Your needs will be paramount in my thoughts even while attending sessions at the state capitol. We can talk about how we will pass laws on the state level, but there are numerous other problems that must be addressed here in the 61st District. Some of those include our young men being suspended from school, our young ladies making the wrong choices, the older generation not being able to afford to pay for their medicine, and all those who are having to forclose on thier homes. The above detailed problems have multifaceted resolutions that must be addressed with compassion and commitment, not words, but deeds. It is my objective to make your desires and concerns number 1. We cannot expect the State of Florida to solve all our problems because many of our solutions lie within the people of the 61st District and I, Sharon Carter, will work tirelessly for the 61st District. I will move forward with what the honorable Betty Reed established.
